The Collierville Dragons traveled to Jackson, Tn. to play
the Jackson Central Merry Cougars. Both teams came into the
game with an 8-2 record. In a game that provided big plays from
both teams the Cougars outscored the Dragons 33 -24.
Sr. RB Steven Hall had
a great game scoring all 3 Dragon touchdowns. Hall ran for 1,
caught a 34 yard pass for another, and returned a fumble for
his third TD. He gained 178 yards on 17 carries and added 89
more yards on 4 kickoff returns. Hall ended the season with
1033 yards rushing on 138 carries. He had to carry the load
on this night due to Jr. RB Undray Wright leaving the game early
due to an injury.
Sr. RB/CB Brandon Kennon had another consistent night adding
an interception ending the season with 7. Leading the team in
tackles were Jr. CB Rogers Thweat with 10. Sr. DE Brent
Hogue and Jr. LB Jake Storz each had 8 tackles with Sr.
DE Trey Day getting 7 and
Hall had 5. Hogue also had a sack and punted 3 times for a 41.3
yard average. Sr. DL Guy Featherstone had 3 stops in the backfield
for big losses. Sr. LB Carson Hunter forced a fumble in which
Hall recovered it and ran 53 yards for a touchdown. Other great
plays were made by Sr.'s DL Kevin Hogue and Daniel Mayfield.
Jr. kicker C. J. Passmore continued his perfect extra point
streak and added a field goal.
Opening big holes for Hall to run through were Sr. center
Nick Peterson, Sr. guards
Turner Smith and Carson
Hunter, and Sr. tackles Guy Featherstone and Kevin
Presley, and Sr. TE Trey Day and Jr. TE Kent
DeVinney The group provided good enough blocking for Sr.
QB Jon Paul Brashear
to throw 7 completions for 99 yards and a touchdown. Most of
his completions went to Sr. WR Andy
Key who had 5 catches for 56 yards. Key also had 4 punt
returns for 30 yards.
The game started with the Dragons winning the toss and electing
to receive. On their 2nd offensive series, RB Steven Hall took
a handoff up the middle and ran 43 yards for the 1st touchdown
of the night. Good cross blocks were made by center Nick Peterson
and guard Carson Hunter.
The Cougars struck back quickly. On their 1st offensive
play, the QB threw a quick pass in the backfield to the WR.
The WR threw it deep hitting another receiver for a 74 yard
touchdown. The game was tied 7 - 7 .
Collierville was unable to move the ball on its next offensive
series and punted it away. JCM drove the ball to the 13. The
Dragon defense held but JCM came away with 3 points on a field
goal. The Cougars were ahead 10 - 7 to end the 1st quarter.
The Dragons took the kickoff out the 30 yard line. Big gains
up the middle were made by Hall and RB Brandon Kennon. QB Jon
Paul Brashear hit Sr. WR Andy Key over the middle for a 7 yard
gain down to the 23. Jr. kicker C. J. Passmore was called in
and hit the 43 yard field goal with 7:53 in the 2nd quarter.
It was a tie game at 10 - 10.
JCM scored quickly on their next possession. In a series
in which Jr. DE Kent Devinney knocked down a pass and DB Steven
Hall had an extremely hard hit, the Cougars scored on 2 passes.
The 1st was for 60 yards bringing them down to the 30. The next
play went the rest of the way for another touchdown. It was
now 17 - 10 JCM.
The next score came when Collierville took over with good
field position at the Cougar 43. On the 1st play Brashear hit
Key for a 7 yard gain. Two plays later, Brashear threw a screen
pass to Hall for a 34 yard touchdown. The half ended tied up
at 17.
The 3rd quarter opened with JCM on offense. The Cougars
drove 9 plays and kicked a field goal from 35 yards out. JCM
was back on top 20 - 17. JCM scored next on a punt that was
fumbled and returned for the touchdown. JCM went up 27 - 17
with 7:34 left in the game.
For the next several series, both teams turned it over.
JCM had just taken over at the Dragon 48. The Cougar RB took
it wide right. LB Carson Hunter hit the running back and forced
a fumble. Hall scooped it up and went 53 yards for a touchdown.
The Dragons closed the lead 27 - 24 with 3:36 left in the game.
Again the Cougars came back and struck quickly. On their
3rd offensive play the JCM quarterback hit his receiver down
the sideline for a 78 yard touchdown strike with 3:14 in the
game. The play took the wind out of the Dragons. There was no
more scoring and JCM won 33 - 24.
Collierville ended the season 8 - 3. It was a season that
"could have been". A Special Thank You goes out to our coaches,
seniors, and the rest of the team. The memories of this season
will last a lifetime. We are proud to be part of the Collierville
