Collierville Dragons 59
Kirby Cougars 12
Week #2 8/31/01 at Collierville

Wow! The Dragons dominated the Kirby Cougars from start to finish. There were so many highlights that it is going to be hard to cover them all. By the end of the 1st quarter, Collierville was ahead 17 - 0. By half, it was 31 - 0. Collierville's Coach Paul Cox pulled the first team midway through the 3rd quarter allowing a lot of playing time for all. Kirby scored their 2 touchdowns on the Collierville reserves. The Mighty Dragon 1st team "D" has not given up a point thus far. Playing conservatively on offense, the Dragons continued scoring till the very end.

C. J. Passmore lead the Dragons on their 1st score of the night with a 36 yd. field goal. Passmore had a perfect night adding 6 extra points as well. Within a few minutes, Steven Hall had a fantastic run going 42 yds. for a score. The Dragon Defense kept Kirby from making a 1st down on the next series. Collierville opened the next drive when QB John Paul Brashear completed a 15 yd. pass to WR Andy Key. Inside the 10 yd. line, Key had to go up between 2 Cougar defenders before pulling down the completion. A couple of plays later, RB Undray Wright completed the drive with the 1st of his 2 touchdowns from 2 yds out.

Going into the 2nd quarter, the Dragon defense denied the Cougars again from any 1st downs. On the next possession, QB Brashear hit RB Undray Wright for 22 yds. and another score. Again the mighty Dragon "D" kept Kirby's offense from moving the ball. QB Brashear ran an option right and scored from 16 yds. out. The Dragons went in at half time 31 - 0. In the 2nd half, the Collierville "D" held again setting up RB Hall's 2nd touchdown from 8 yds. out. Coach Cox pulled the 1st team at this point.

Before leaving the field, lead by a strong front line and LB's Carson Hunter and Brian Bowie, the Dragon's 1st team defense recovered several forced fumbles. DE's Brent Hogue and Trey Day and others had many sacks. FS Steven Hall had his 2nd interception of the year as well.

The Collierville reserve players finished the game with an impressive performance. They outscored the Cougar 1st team 21 to 12. Next years Dragon stars had an interception by CB Taylor Brashear, a 9 yd. touchdown run by RB James (J.R.) Smith, and a 2 yd. touchdown run by QB Josh Smith.

Sr. RB Brian Bowie added a touchdown from 9 yards out.

As the Dragon football team was enjoying themselves, so were the fans. Mardi Gras couldn't have been more fun. There was joy on the field and in the stands. Team members were seen doing playful imitations on the sidelines and the old folks in the stands were dancing and cheering. CHS Principal Dr. Setterlund was laughing and smiling.

The Mighty Student Corp. provided almost as much entertainment as did the team. They were chanting individual player names following great plays. After each score, the "push-up crew" had to cheat to complete the task. Megaphone man and parent, Shelton Bowie thought he was still the Bulldog Mascot at Mississippi State. Mothers with Poms (MWP's) were dancing while the music played during timeouts. All of this went on during a light rain for most of the game. Who Cared!! The coaches appeared serious the whole time but we know they they were busting with pride.

Now it is time to get back to business. Next week the Dragons host Sheffield, then travel to arch-rival Germantown. The team cannot get the "big head" and think the rest of the season will be a cake walk. Sheffield will come out fighting, hoping Collierville will be looking down the road. This team should always remember how Central was overlooked last year by administering a whipping in the 1st round of the playoffs. The Dragons cannot afford any mental letdowns. Each game has be taken one at a time. As Americans "Remember Pearl Harbor", the Dragons should "Remember Central". This writer will remind them often.
