On Friday night, The Collierville Dragons played away
from home the 2nd week in a row. They traveled to Millington
High School Trojans Stadium. Sr. RB Steven
Hall had another great night scoring 2 touchdowns on
15 carries for 138 yards. He also had an interception and
10 unassisted tackles
Other outstanding performances go to Sr. WR Andy
Key returning a punt 67 yards for a touchdown, Sr. CB
Brandon Kennon for catching his 3rd interception for the
year, and Sr. QB Jon
Paul Brashear connecting with Jr. RB Undray Wright for
a touchdown. Center Sr. Nick
Peterson (3 year starter) & OT Kevin
Presley had another consistent and solid game.
Defensively, LB Brian Bowie was all over the field giving
out punishing hits. The Dragon DE's Trey
Day and Brent Hogue had another solid performance. Hogue
& Day have to be one of the best pair of ends in Tennessee.
The Dragon 1st team defense kept Millington from good field
position all night. Millington never got inside the 25 yard
line. Their 2 scores came in the 4th quarter against Dragon
reserves.
Dragon Jr. Kicker C. J. Passmore came into the game
ranked 2nd in the Shelby Metro area averaging 5.5 points
per game. Passmore had another perfect game this night.
Millington received the opening kickoff for a short
return. On their 1st offensive series, Sr. DL Guy Featherstone
had a sack and Jr. LB Jake Storz fast pursuit made a solo
tackle outside the end. The Trojans had to punt without
getting the 1st down. The Dragons opening drive ended the
same way. The offensive line wasn't able to open any holes
and the Dragons had to punt.
Millington was unable to get a 1st down again and had
to punt. This time, Dragon Sr. PR Andy Key was waiting.
Fielding a high kick, Key zig-zagged down the sideline going
67 yards for the 1st touchdown of the night. Sr. OLB Jonathon
Edmunds had a big block on the play.
The Trojan offense was unable to sustain any continued
drives the 1st half. Keeping it on the ground, they were
able to get a few 1st downs on each drive. The mighty Dragon
"D" stopped them each time before reaching the 50 yard line.
Important defensive stops in the 1st half were made by Storz,
Featherstone, Bowie, Sr. LB Carson Hunter, and DE's Day
& Hogue.
In the 2nd quarter, Collierville was punting from mid-field.
Faking the punt, RB Kennon went 25 yards for a 1st down.
From the 25 yard line, Sr. QB Jon Paul Brashear ran an option
left and went down the sideline 11 yards for a dragon 1st
down. Two plays later, Hall scored his 1st touchdown from
14 yards out. Collierville went in at the half with a 14
- 0 lead.
On the 1st offensive series of the 2nd half, Collierville
drove 65 yards in 8 plays to score. Hall had a run for about
35 yards. From the 34, he then took the handoff from Brashear
and scored his 2nd touchdown. The Dragons were in command
21 - 0.
The Dragon 1st team defensive continued to hold the
Trojans. Sr. DT's Daniel Mayfield and Turner
Smith had big stops in the middle. Pinned inside the
15 yard line, Millington tried going to the air. FS Hall
was waiting and caught a tipped pass for his 2nd interception
of the year. On the next defensive series, Edmunds broke
up a pass and had a big stop at the line of scrimmage.
The Dragon offense was able to move the ball fairly
well, but continued to score on big plays. Early in the
4th quarter, Brashear threw a 24 yard touchdown strike to
Wright for the Dragons last score. The Dragon reserves finished
the game and allowed the 2 Millington touchdowns. Collierville
won 28 - 12.
Next Friday, 9/28/01, the Dragons play host to undefeated
& Region 8-5A leader Whitehaven High School Tigers. Collierville
and Whitehaven were picked early in the season as the two
best teams in the area. Come to Collierville's Herman Osteen
Field and watch the Dragons prevail in the regional showdown.
