On a perfect night for football, Collierville hosted
non-conference Overton High School Wolverines. An all-around
performance by the Dragon defense, offense & special teams
contributed to the victory. The reserves were called in
again very early and continued to dominate the game for
a 44 - 8 win.
Sr. RB/CB Brandon Kennon had another outstanding performance
by recording his 6th interception, catching a pass for a
touchdown, and throwing on another 4th down conversion for
a big gain. Sr. RB/DB Steven
Hall ran for 126 yards on 17 carries for 2 touchdowns
and caught a pass for another touchdown. Jr. CB/RB Undray
Wright had an interception and returned it for a touchdown
and Jr. Kicker C. J. Passmore added 8 points to the score.
For his 1st varsity start, Jr. QB Josh Smith handled
the offense well by completing 3 passes for 75 yards and
2 touchdowns. Smith filled in for Sr. QB Jon
Paul Brashear who was unable to play do to an illness.
Sr. DE Trey Day lead
the team in tackles with 5, had a sack & caught an interception.
Sr. Brian Lutz & Jr. Jake Storz lead the linebackers with
4 tackles each. Storz also had a fumble recovery and an
interception. Lutz combined for a sack. Jr. CB James Smith
also recorded 4 unassisted tackles as well as So. CB Taylor
Brashear's 4.
The Dragons opened the game by receiving the short kickoff
and putting the ball in play at the 36 yards line. On the
4th play of the drive, RB Steven Hall ran for 17 yards due
to Sr. center Nick Peterson
& Sr. RG Carson Hunter's cross-block which opened the big
hole. Collierville's 10-play drive stalled at the Wolverine's
22-yard line when the Dragons failed on a 4th down conversion
attempt.
The Overton offense attempted a pass on its 1st play.
DE Trey Day jumped up and snagged it for an interception
at the Wolverines 46. Collierville quickly gave it back
on the 3rd play by throwing an interception as well.
Overton was able to gain a 1st down but was forced to
return it back to Collierville. On 4th down, the Wolverines
faked a punt and Sr. LB Brian Bowie had the big stop in
the backfield at the Dragon's 48. Collierville drove it
down the field to the 5 yard line. With 8:44 in the 2nd
quarter, Passmore was called in and kicked a field goal
for a Dragon 3 - 0 lead.
Overton took over at their own 15 yard line. On their
3rd play, the Wolverine QB operating out of the "shotgun"
was rushed by Sr. De Brent
Hogue and threw another interception. This time, LB
Storz was waiting and picked it off. The Dragons took over
with great field position at the 23. On a 5 play drive QB
Josh Smith completed 2 passes. The score came when Hall
caught a screen pass from 16 yards out. Peterson had another
great block on the score, as did Sr. LT Kevin
Presley. The Dragons were ahead 10 - 0 with 3:44 left
in the 2nd quarter.
Overton received the kickoff and returned it to midfield
with plenty of time on the clock. On their 2nd play, a sweep
right proved futile when DE Trey Day made the Wolverine
RB run wide. Day along with FS Hall and Jr. LB Robbie Seahorn
combined on a big hit and forced a fumble which was recovered
by LB Storz at the Dragon's 42.
Collierville was able to get a 1st down but appeared
to stall at the Wolverine 38. On 4th down and in punt formation,
upback Brandon Kennon audibled the fake. Kennon found Jr.
RB James "J.R." Smith streaking down the right sideline.
Smith was dragged down short of the goal line at the 1.
On the next play with 34 seconds left in the half, Sr. LG
Turner Smith opened
a hole and Hall carried it over for his 2nd score of the
night. The Dragons took a commanding half time 17 - 0 lead.
Collierville kicked off to open the 2nd half. On Oveton's
2nd offensive play, a sweep left ended in the backfield
when LB Bowie had another stop behind the line of scrimmage.
On 4th down, the Wolverine's punt was blocked by So. DE
Derek Riley.
Collierville took over at the Dragon 45. Driving to
the Wolverine 45, QB Smith dropped back and found RB Kennon
down the middle. At the 21, Kennon caught the pass without
breaking stride and ran it into the endzone. With 7:44 left
in the 3rd quarter the Dragons lead 24 - 0.
Overton was unable to move the ball and punted it back.
On the 3rd play at the Dragon's 46, center Nick Peterson
had another great cross block, this time with Sr. RG Carson
Hunter. Coming from LG, Turner
Smith sealed the LB and the 3 combined to open another
huge hole. Hall cleared the line, cut left, and ran 54 yards
before tripping (riiight) at the goal line and flying into
the end zone for his 3rd score. It was now 31 - 0.
The Wolverine's received the kickoff and had another
big return bringing it down to the Collierville 42 yard
line. On their 3rd play, Dragon Sr. DL Guy Featherstone
stormed into the backfield and had a tackle behind the line
of scrimmage for an 8 yard loss. On the next play, DE's
Day and Hogue rushed the QB and had a stop 3 yards behind
the line. In a passing situation, the Wolverine QB threw
a pass out towards the right sideline. CB Undray Wright
was waiting and picked it off at the 36. Wright went 65
yards untouched for the Dragon's 5th score of the night.
With 3:08 left in the 3rd quarter, the Dragons were up 38
- 0.
On the kickoff, Passmore squib kicked into the front
line. So. RB Ryan Murphy jumped on the ball and recovered
the short kick at the Wolverine's 44 yard line. The Collierville
coaches began making mass substitutions. The Dragons were
unable to get a 1st down and punted it away.
Overton was unable to move the ball and was again forced
into a passing situation. The QB threw a deep ball down
the left sideline and CB Kennon picked it off for his team
leading 6th interception of the year.
Collierville was able to get a couple of 1st downs
before fumbling the ball at the Wolverine's 28. On a 4th
and 3 situation, a host of Dragons had a big drop behind
the line of scrimmage for a 6 yard loss giving the ball
back to the powerful offense. The reserve offense drove
it down to the Wolverine 36. RG Seahorn pulled left and
had a great block downfield which gave RB "J.R." Smith running
room. Smith outran the rest of the Wolverines and scored.
The Dragons were way out in front 44 - 0.
On their next series, the Wolverines QB threw a 70 yard
touchdown strike. Overton made the 2 point conversion with
3 minutes to go in the game.
Collierville went on to win 44 - 8.
On Friday come and watch Collierville play its last
home game of the year. White Station will host Collierville
on the Dragon's home field. Dragon season tickets will not
be accepted. Collierville will be welcoming back QB Jon
Paul Brashear on Senior Night.
