In a game that seemed long, ended without
playing a full four quarters. At the end of the 3rd quarter,
the Sheffield Knights offered to surrender. A rarely used rule
allows for the final quarter to be reduced from the normal twelve
minutes to four. This would be equivalent to the 10 run slaughter
rule in baseball, except it leaves the decision to the coaches.
Collierville cruised to a 42-6 victory.
The dominant Dragons defense limited the
Knights offense to -3 yards rushing but gave up 136 yards in
the air. Collierville's hard hitters caused six fumbles with
Sr. DL Daniel Mayfield being credited with a forced fumble.
Sr. DE's Brent Hogue and Trey Day had another outstanding performance.
Day, who is leading the team in tackles, combined with Jr. DL
Brandon Yowler for a sack. Hogue had an unassisted sack and
a fumble recovery. Sr. DL Bryan Lutz and Jr. Kent DeVinney combined
for a sack as well.
Sr. CB Jonathon Edmunds lead the team with
five unassisted tackles. The hard hitting Sr. LB Brian Bowie
left the Dragon fans feeling sorry for the opposition. Jr. RB/CB
Undray Wright had another superb game with two interceptions.
On offense, Wright and Sr. RB Brandon Kennon
each had 2 rushing touchdowns. Sr. QB Jon Paul Brashear had
another flawless night. Brashear who rarely makes mistakes,
showed his running skills as well as throwing the ball with
extreme accuracy. He added 43 yards rushing on 6 attempts. Even
though he was 4 for 8, most of the incompletions were dropped
balls. Two of those completions were for touchdowns. TE Trey
Day caught a 21 yard pass in the end zone and Sr. RB Steven
Hall caught the other from 21 yards. Hall ended the night with
79 yards rushing and 41 yards receiving.
For the 3rd week in a row, the Dragons jumped
on the score board quickly. It was 21-0 at the end of the 1st
quarter. Kennon scored from 3 yards out, followed by Wright's
14 yard scamper. Day ended the quarter with the 21 yard TD strike
from Brashear. In the 2nd quarter, Brashear threw to Hall for
a 21 yard TD. In the 3rd quarter, Wright went 15 yards for his
other TD and again Kennon followed from 23 yards out.
We know that backs and receivers get all
the press coverage. They know it would not be possible without
great blocking. The Dragon OL, lead by Sr.s, Nick Peterson,
Guy Featherstone, Kevin Presley, Carson Hunter, and Turner Smith
were dominant. Kevin Presley was very impressive with key blocks
on 2 touchdown runs.
The next game for the Dragons will be arch
rival Germantown. It will be Collierville's 1st real test of
the season. Next door neighbor Germantown will host the game
for the 3rd year in a row. Both teams come in with a 3-0 record.
League standing and bragging rights are at stake. The players
don't need motivation to get pumped up. Neither does the Dragon's
traveling Student Corp. If Collierville reduces their penalties
and turnovers they will get the "W".
This writer again wants to remind the Dragon
players to come back down to earth. You haven't proven greatness
yet. The real competition is about to begin.
Come and see this great annual event Friday,
7:30 p.m. at Red Devil field.
