The White Station High School Spartans came to Collierville's
Herman Osteen Stadium to play in the last regularly scheduled
game of the year. The Dragon seniors were honored before the
game in front of a large crowd on a nippy night. Coach Paul
Cox recorded his 200th victory while at Collierville. The
Dragons demolished the Region 8-5A member Spartans 49 - 6.
The Dragons finished the regular season with an 8 - 2 overall
record and 4 -2 in regional play.
Collierville went into the half leading 42 - 0. Most
of the starters did not play any in the 2nd half. Sr. QB Jon
Paul Brashear had a great return after missing last week's
game due to illness. Brashear ran for 1 touchdown, threw for
2 more while going 5 of 9 for 88 yards. Jr. RB Undray Wright
caught 2 of the touchdown passes and ran for 1 other. Sr.
RB Steven Hall had a touchdown,
2 interceptions, and a blocked kick. Jr. MLB Jake Storz led
the tackling with 8, followed by Sr. LB's Bryan Lutz & Brian
Bowie having 6 each. Jr. Kicker C. J. Passmore had another
perfect night hitting all 7 extra points.
The game started with the Dragons winning the toss and
electing to receive. The kick was short and not returned.
On their 2nd play from scrimmage at the Dragon 38, Jr. RB
Undray Wright took a handoff around left end. Sr. LG Turner
Smith pulled to lead the blocking and took out 2 Spartan
defenders. Wright cut off of Smith's block and went the distance
for the score. With 11:13 in the 1st quarter, the Dragons
went up 7 - 0.
The Spartans began their 1st possession at there 20. On
3rd and 10, the QB attempted a short pass in the flats and
FS Steven Hall picked it off at the 30 yard line. On a 6 play
drive, Brashear ran an option right and scored from the 7
yard line. The Dragons jumped out to a 14 - 0 lead with 9:05
left in the 1st quarter.
The Spartan's next short possession began at the 30. MLB
Storz hit the RB at the line of scrimmage and forced a fumble,
which Sr. DL
Guy Featherstone recovered. Collierville again had excellent
field position at the Spartan 38. On the 2nd play, Sr. RB
Brandon Kennon took it around right end for a 22 yard score.
Again great blocks were made by Featherstone and Sr. RG Carson
Hunter pulling and sealing a hole for Kennon. With 8:10 remaining
in the 1st quarter, Collierville was dominating 21 - 0.
White Station was again unable to move the ball on their
next possession. Featherstone had a big stop in the backfield
and the Spartans were forced to punt. The Dragons were unable
to get a 1st down and punted it back. White Station was unable
to move the ball and attempted a punt, which was partially
blocked by Hall. With great field position starting at the
Spartan 37, Hall scored on a 5 play drive from 3 yards out.
Sr. LT Kevin Presley
and Turner Smith opened the hole up the middle. The 1st quarter
ended with the Dragons up 28 - 0.
Both teams punted it back and forth on their next possessions.
The Spartans finally got a 1st down on a Dragon penalty but
was force to punt again. Sr. punt returner Andy
Key took it back 16 yards to the Spartan 48. On the 6th
play from the 33, QB Brashear found RB Wright open at the
18. Wright caught the pass, broke 2 tackles and scored his
2nd touchdown. It was now 35 - 0.
The Spartans were able to get a 1st down but were force
to punt again. This time, Hall got "all ball" and blocked
his 2nd punt of the half. Sr. DE Trey
Day scooped it up and was brought down at the Spartan
34. With 5 seconds left in the 1st half, Brashear again found
Wright down the right side for a 25 yard pass and another
touchdown. Collierville took a 42 - 0 commanding lead into
the locker room.
The 2nd half was pretty much uneventful. The Dragon reserve
offense continued to out gain the Spartans but were only able
to score 1 more touchdown. Sr. RB Brent
Hogue ended a 5 play - 49 yard drive with a 4 yard run
into the end zone. On another great play, Steven Hall got
his 2nd interception of the game. The Spartan lone score came
on a 25 yard pass with no time left on the clock. Collierville
easily won 49 - 6.
On Friday November 2nd, the Dragons travel to Jackson
Central Merry for the 1st round of the State Class 5A playoffs.
Two years ago, Collierville beat JCM at their home in the
playoffs. JCM will be looking for revenge after winning their
Region 7-5A title with a victory over Cordova.
It would be great to see a large Dragon crowd cheering
the team on to the next round.
