The Dragons rebounded this week with a balanced offensive display
in their victory over the Trojans from Millington High School. Sr.
QB Josh Smith led the Dragon attack with 209 yards passing connecting
on 6 of 9 attempts to combine with a ground assault that generated
204 yards by 8 different running backs.
The Dragons took the opening kickoff and drove
down the field with So. Brian Hall scoring from 3 yards out at the
7:43 mark. C.J. Passmore added
the extra point for the 7 - 0 lead, a lead that was never threatened
the rest of the night.
The stingy defense stopped the Trojans on their
next possession setting up the beginning of the Dragon aerial assault.
With 6:07 remaining in the first quarter, Smith
hit his favorite receiver on the night, Jr. Jon Scruggs with an
18 yard strike for the TD. Passmore's PAT put the Dragon's up 14
- 0.
The defense was led by Sr.'s LB Jake
Storz & Robbie Seahorn
and FS Hall with 9, 6, and 12 tackles respectively. Jr. Brian Nevill
forced a fumble on Millington's next possession and was recovered
by Hall to end the first quarter.
The offensive machine continued to roll as the
Dragon's scored quickly in the 2nd. Smith hit a streaking Scruggs
for a 67 yard TD to put the home team ahead by 21 after Passmore's
PAT.
The Trojans followed by mounting their first
sustained drive only to be stopped by another fumble, recovered
by Scruggs. The Dragons drove 60 yards with Smith completing passes
to SR. TE Kent DeVinney, Jr.
RB Taylor Brashear, and Sr. WR Rogers
Thweat. Sr. RB James Smith then scored from 2 yards out with
:52 remaining in the half for a 35 - 0 lead.
With :25 left the Dragons
were in a prevent defense when Jr. DE Todd
Madison intercepted the Trojan pass and returned it 32 yards
for a TD making the score at the half 35 - 0.
The Trojans took the second half kick-off and
mounted the longest drive of the night. Aided by 4 fourth down conversions,
Millington retained possession for the entire third quarter, but
was turned away by the strong defensive performance by the Dragons.
The Dragon's final score on the night came on
5 yard run by Brashear that made the score 42 - 0 with 10:49 remaining
in the game.
The balance of the game saw valuable playing
time for many reserves that will be counted on by seasons end. Brashear
led all rushers with 59 yards followed by Nevill with 44, Hall with
28, Ja. Smith with 22 and Jo. Smith with 21. Scruggs led all receivers
with 3 receptions for 142 yards and 2 TD's.
The Dragons travel to Whitehaven Friday for a
critical region match-up.
