The Dragons had two outstanding pre season scrimmages against
cross town rivals, Cordova High School and Evangelical Christian
School. Collierville dominated both contests by allowing just
one touchdown, which occurred late against the reserves on defense
and moving the ball seemingly at will on offense while scoring
at least 8 touchdowns. This 2002 Dragon squad has accepted the
challenge to replace a very large group of seniors that started
last year. This years results were comparable to last summers
efforts.
Scores were posted by all of the running backs including
Sr Josh Smith at Quarterback, Sr. James Smith at Wingback, So.
Brian Hall at Wingback, Jr. Taylor Brashear at Fullback, and
receivers Sr. Rogers Thweatt,
Jr. Jonathon Scruggs and Sr. Kent
DeVinney. Josh Smith ran the offense extremely well, while
running for good yardage on the option and passed extremely
well to his receivers.
The three starting running backs of Smith, Brashear and
Hall demonstrated that experience is not a big factor in determining
solid play. The relatively inexperienced trio ran at will through
solid competition, with all three backs considered as standing
out.
Both lines seemed to come together during practice fairly
quickly and made very few mistakes, a key to good line play.
The offensive line made great holes for our backs while closing
holes on defense. Some key players were moved around to make
a solid unit. At this writing it looks like So. Scott Eller,
Sr. Robbie Seahorn, Sr. Jake Storz, Jr. Brad Pace, Sr. Josh
Peeples, Sr. Chris Hutson, DeVinney,
Jr. Clarence Featherstone, and Sr. C.J.
Passmore will all make solid contributions to the line this
year. It does look like several other players will make solid
line contributions in a supporting role as well this year. The
linebacker group will be lead by Storz, Seahorn, Brashear and
Sr. Grant Williams. The defensive backfield will be lead by
s Thweatt, Scruggs, Hall
and Josh Smith.
