Dragon
game captains Trey Ruben, Matt Clark, and Nick McClorey
led CHS to Cordova Field for what would prove to be a
painful lesson for the Cordova Freshmen in Football 101.
A physical first half saw the Dragons jump out to a 9-0
lead followed by a second half totally dominated by the
Dragons.
Brett Rogers’ opening kickoff sailed 5 yards
deep into the end zone, setting up the Wolves first
and ten at their own 20. Cordova came out with two bruising
running backs that challenged the Dragon defense. Zack
Palmer is credited with a TD saving tackle in the opening
series and the D held, forcing Cordova to punt from
their own 49. CHS QB Bubba Mize continued the opening
series with a third down pass to TE Harrison Bizzell
for 14 yards and a first down. The drive was fueled
by hard running by FB Brett Rogers and TB Zack Palmer.
With the ball on the 24, Bubba Mize hit SE Trey Ruben
with a strike over the middle on a slant pattern….the
play was all Ruben as he broke two solid tackles to
race into the end zone giving the Dragons their first
score of the night. Point after kick by David Ray was
good and the Dragons led 7-0.
Rogers’ kickoff was returned to the 24 where
the Wolves started first and ten. The Dragon defense
began their punishment with DT Nick McClorey and DE
Harrison Bizzell making great stops and seeing the Wolves’
offense slowly begin to move into reverse. A questionable
flag for roughing the passer negated a beautiful interception
and return by FS Garrett Bizzell. On the next two plays,
NT Clayton Huff rocked the Cordova runner for no gain
and then pressured and popped the Cordova QB forcing
an incomplete pass. Cordova was forced to punt and CHS
took over on their own 44 yard line. This series saw
hard line blocking and determined running by TB Jason
Goins. The Dragons cranked out three first downs in
the drive before a fourth and four saw QB Bubba Mize’s
keeper to the right fall short of the first down marker
at the Cordova 14 yard line. The Dragon D had the Wolves
right where they wanted them. On first down Clayton
Huff, George Bland, and Harrison Bizzell smacked the
QB for a 5 yard loss. After another 1 yard loss, George
Bland caught the Cordova QB in the end zone for a safety.
Dragons led 9-0. Following the free kick from the 20,
the Dragons were not able to move into scoring position
and the 9-0 score followed them into the locker room
for halftime.
The Dragons received the 2nd half kickoff and started
first and ten at their own 33. This possession would
ultimately result in 5 first downs and literally use
up the entire 3rd Quarter before the drive stalled deep
in Cordova territory. The 3rd Quarter was owned by the
Collierville offensive line and saw the offensive unit
gain momentum as they out muscled and out toughed the
talented Cordova squad. This was Football 101.
Cordova took over on downs at the beginning of the
4th Quarter deep in their own territory. Clayton Huff,
Harrison Bizzell, and Joe White punished the Cordova
offense on three consecutive downs. On fourth down,
the Cordova long snapper sent the ball sailing over
the punter’s head and out of the end zone for
another safety. Collierville led 11-0.
After trading possessions, the Dragon offense cranked
up the heat and put together a final drive culminating
in a touchdown pass from Bubba Mize to FL David Ray
on fourth down with 18.5 seconds remaining in the game.
The extra point was no good, Dragons win 17-0.
While Zack Palmer, Jason Goins, Bubba Mize, and Brett
Rogers provided rugged running the offensive and defensive
lines dominated the line of scrimmage in the second
half led by Clayton Huff, Harrison Bizzell, Joe White,
George Bland, and Laine Halfacre.
