Captains - Sr's. (l to r) Todd Madison, Dustin Brasher, Brad Pace, & Taylor Brashear

Questionable calls and a good Bolton team lead to a heartbreaking loss for the Dragons in the first round of the state playoffs.

Collierville jumped out to an early lead on their first possession when Jr. QB Brian Hall raced around the right side 65 yards for a touchdown. The extra point attempt failed, but the Dragons had a 6-0 lead. After stopping Bolton on their first possession, Hall connected with Sr. WR Jon Scruggs for a 68 yard touchdown, giving the Dragons an early 12-0 lead. The 2 point conversion failed, leaving the Dragons up by 12. Bolton would answer on their next possession on a 3 yard touchdown run. The extra point left the Dragons clinging to a 12-7 lead with 3:52 left in the first quarter. The Bolton defense would shut down the Dragon offense in the second quarter and take a 14-12 lead on a 17yard pass play. The Dragons and Bolton would trade possessions the rest of the second quarter and go into halftime with the score 14-12.

The third quarter saw Bolton extend their lead to 21-12 on a 1 yard rushing touchdown with 6:23 remaining. The Dragons would mount a rally on the next possession with Hall connecting with Sr. RB Brian Nevill on a 27yard touchdown pass. The 2 point conversion
failed again leaving Bolton with a 21-18 lead.

Offensively, the Dragons were led by Hall’s 186 yards rushing followed by Sr. Taylor Brashear with 26 yards and Sr. Brian Nevill’s 13 yards. Hall connected on 4 pass attempts with completions to Sr. WR Jon Scruggs, Sr. TE Todd Madison, Nevill, and Sr. J.R. Moorehead. Defensively, the Dragons were lead by Sr. LB Dustin Brasher’s 18 tackles, followed by Sr. DE Clarence Featherstone's 7 and Jr. Scott Eller with 6. The Dragon defense also came up big with 5 sacks, 1 each from Eller, Madison, Brasher and 2 from Featherstone.

The Dragons fought all the way back in the fourth quarter to take the lead with 5:13 left in the game on Hall’s 44 yard touchdown run. The extra point made the score 25-21. The Dragons held Bolton on their next possession and were driving for the score that would put the game out of reach when they were faced with, what turned out to be, a critical 4th down. The Dragons were on the Bolton 25 yard line and needed a long yard for the first down. .

The Dragons decided against the field goal try and with the Bolton defense having all 11 men on the line of scrimmage, Hall’s run was stopped short of the first down.

Bolton would take possession and escape on a fourth and 12 play by a highly questionable pass interference call which gave them new life. With a mere 4.6 seconds remaining in the game, the Bolton quarterback would find his favorite wide receiver on the left side for the 40 yard game winning touchdown.

The Dragon’s ended the 2003 season with a 7-4 record. The Dragon’s seniors showed exceptional heart all season. From this reporters’ (and parents’) point of view, the following group of seniors displayed an unselfish, total team focused, leadership and attitude all year and we congratulate them on their success:
