he Dragons prevailed in a classic defensive battle at Herman Osteen Field and remain undefeated at 4-0, 1-0 in Region 8-5A. The Wolves from Cordova put a bridle on the high-powered Dragon offense holding them to 229 yards of total offense while amassing 347 yards of offense themselves. Key turnovers and penalties, along with a spectacular goal line stand would be the difference in this hard fought contest.

All he can do is wave bye as Brian Hall clears his grasp

The Dragons took the opening kick-off, but were unable to gain a first down after starting the drive with an illegal substitution penalty and were forced to punt. Cordova’s first possession ended after the Wolves had driven to the Dragon 49 yd line where Sr. LB Dustin Brasher forced a fumble that was recovered by Sr. Jon Scruggs. Sr. FB Taylor Brashear made the Dragons initial first down on the night on a nifty run off the left side. Jr. QB Brian Hall followed with the first of 3 completions on the night with an 11 yard pass to Scruggs.

The highlight of the drive came 2 plays later on another Hall pass. The pass was tipped by the Cordova defender and Jr. Jonathan Able made a one-handed acrobatic catch to keep the drive alive. With 3:57 left in the 1st quarter, Sr. RB Brian Nevill ran 3 yards for the touchdown. Brett Caldwell’s extra point gave the Dragon’s a 7-0 lead.

The Wolves went 3 and out on their next possession and were forced to punt. The Dragons were driving for another score when an errant pass from the scrambling Hall was intercepted. Cordova began their possession on their own 44 yd line and was driving deep into Dragon territory when a Wolves pass was deflected by the intended receiver, tipped by Jr. LB Andrew White and intercepted by Sr. J.R. Moorehead who returned it 15 yards.

The Dragon’s drove to the Wolves 18 yard line before a fumbled snap force a 4th down incompletion to Scruggs in the end zone. Cordova then mounted their best and longest drive of the night. Starting from their own 18 yard line, the Wolves drove inside the Dragon 5 yard line to set up 1st and goal. The Dragon defense held Cordova on 4 straight plays which ended with Brashear and Nevill popping, stopping and dropping the Cordova QB at the 1 foot line. The Dragons ran out the clock to take their 7-0 lead to the locker room and the half.

The Wolves and the Dragons were both forced to punt on their first possessions in the second half. Cordova was able to score on their next possession as they took the ball from their own 32 to the Dragon end zone with the aid of a 50 yard pass play. After the extra point it was Collierville 7, Cordova 7.
The Dragon’s “bend, don’t break” defense was led by Sr. LB Dustin Brasher and Jr. Brian Hall with 11 tackles each. Jr. LB Andrew White added 9 tackles with Sr. Stanley Wilson adding 8. Hall also collected a key fumble recovery in the second half with Cordova driving. The Dragon offense was led by Brashear’s 16/70 yards, Hall’s 15/65 yards with Nevill adding 17 yards and Jr. Jordon Pedron adding 13 yards rushing.
After the fourth quarter fumble recovery by Hall, the Dragons began their game winning drive. The highlight of the drive came when a scrambling Hall found a wide open Pedron, who had slipped behind the defense, for a 44 yard gain which set-up Brett Caldwell’s 21 game winning field goal. The Wolves mounted one more impressive drive, but ended with a failed 47 yard field goal attempt. The Dragons were able to run out the game clock and escape with a hard fought victory.
This is Homecoming week and the Dragons will host White Station this Friday in another key region contest.
