"Gallatin News Examiner" Game Article

Article by: Bruce Madison

The Dragons traveled to middle Tennessee to open the 2003 season at powerful Gallatin High School. After traveling four hours from Collierville, the game was delayed more than 2 hours due to severe thunderstorms in the Gallatin area. The faithful Collierville fans were out in force and not too out-numbered by the home team as the night went on. The Dragons won the toss and took the opening kick-off at 9:30 PM Friday night.

Madison scored the 4th qtr. go-ahead TD on a 17 yd. pass from QB Brian Hall

The Dragon offense began dominating on the opening drive, marching down the field before stalling inside the 30 yard line. The Dragons took a 3-0 lead on Jr. Brett Caldwell's 37 yd field goal with 5:41 left in the first quarter. The Dragon defense played spectacular all night and stopped the ensuing Gallatin drive forcing them to punt. The first quarter ended with the Dragons holding a 3-0 lead.

The offensive line of Sr. TE Todd Madison, Jr. Tackle Scott Eller, Sr Guard Stanley Wilson, Sr. Center Brad Pace, Jr. Guard Andrew White and Sr. Tackle David Adams, controlled the line of scrimmage all night. Jr. QB Brian Hall led all rushers with 160 yards on 19 carries, with Sr. FB Taylor Brashear 83 yards on 15 carries, Sr. RB Brian Nevill 35 yards on 10 carries and Sr. RB Clarence Featherstone 18 yards on 3 carries. Early in the 2nd quarter, the Dragons had the ball at their own 30 yd. line. Hall called his own number and behind great blocks by Madison and Wilson, sped 70 yards for the touchdown. Caldwell's XP made the score 10-0 with 7:13 left in the half. With time running out in the half, the Dragons were poised to score again with the ball inside Gallatin's 15 yard line when the Green Wave defense forced a fumble and returned it 88 yards for a TD with less than 25 seconds remaining in the half. The score at halftime was Collierville 10 Gallatin 7.

#51 Dustin Brasher makes the stop at the line of scrimmage. Brasher lead the team with 13 tackles

The Green Wave received the second half kick-off but, due to a personal foul penalty, opened their drive on their own 10 yard line. On the first play Gallatin's talented senior QB Jamison Link, broke through the Dragons defense and sprinted 90 yards for the touchdown giving the Green Wave the lead 14-10. The rest of the third quarter saw outstanding defense by the Dragons led by Sr LB Dustin Brasher with 13 tackles followed by Sr. Derek Riley, Jr. Cody McMeans, Sr. David Adams, and Sr. Clarence Featherstone all with 5 tackles each. Featherstone also recovered a fumble stopping a Gallatin threat to extend their lead.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Dragons were faced with a 4th and 9 at the Gallatin 17 yard line. Hall dropped back and found a wide open Madison for the scoring strike that put the Dragons on top for good. The Dragons ended the night with 354 yards of total offense while limiting the powerful Gallatin Green Wave to 229 yards.

Jr. QB Brian Hall lead the team in rushing with 160 yds. Hall ran for 1 TD and threw for another

Despite the hostile weather, the Dragons started the 2003 season with dominating performances on both sides of the ball. The Dragons return to the friendly confines of Herman Osteen Field this Friday when they host Central.

"ODE to The Collierville Dragons Football Team"
By Kay Huff
When the Dragons rode into Gallatin,
A storm was a brew-n;
Coach Cox was a fume-n, No storm is going to stop us!
The trees were bend-n, lightening was flash-n and tornadoes were a abound-n.

The Collierville Dragons were in town.

They knew the Gallatin Green Waves would be hard to beat, after all they were 11-1 last season and were in the second round of the state playoffs, which is no small feat.

So...
The Dragon's summoned up their fearsome courage and might, to Light the
Fire and give the Green Waves a good fight. They fought a
hard and grisly battle on that wet, slippery field;
But overcame the odds and won 17-14, and OH what a THRILL!

Hats off to you, Dragon Warriors; You all played an awesome game. One more reason, for your growing football fame!
