JV Dragon’s outplay Red Devils in hard fought win
Collierville 18 Germantown 13
9/8/03 @ Germantown H.S.

The Junior Varsity Dragon’s opened the 2003 season last night with a solid performance at Red Devil Stadium. It was solid play on both sides of the ball that got the win. Hard running with timely passing keyed a solid offensive performance. The defense withstood the triple back offense behind a huge offensive line long enough to get the win.

Both teams exchanged punts to open the contest as each team got organized. On the second Dragon possession it was quarterback Jason Smith who hooked up with Taylor Walker for a 30 yard pass play that got things going. It was Noel Moyes who finished the drive with a short score over the left side. The kick attempt failed and the Dragons led 6 to 0. A short wile later it was a solid hit by the right side of the line that was recovered by the dragons near mid field. Casey Shockey electrified the crowd with several hard runs carrying several GT defenders. Again it was Moyes recording the honors and after the two point conversion failed it was the Dragons by 12 points. It took about 12 plays but the Red Devils came back to close the gap to 12 to 7, right before the half ended.

Collierville opened the second half with another long drive keyed with a long pass to Tyler McMillon. It was Tyler McMillon who recorded the score with a short run to widen the score to 18 to 7. Germantown fired right back with a score of there own that closed the score to 18 to 13. The Dragon offense was able to control the ball with two long drives that ended any chance for Germantown to come back.

Casey Shockey and Noel Moyes were the running force for the Dragons, while Jason Smith was completing 4 passes for well over 100 yards. The smaller Dragon offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage, while the defense played seek and destroy against the Germantown Triple back offense. It was a solid effort by the entire squad and a well deserved win.

JV Dragon’s Out Muscle Wolves
Collierville 14 Cordova 0
9/15/03 @ Osteen Field
By John DeVinney

The Junior Varsity Dragon’s played extremely well on Monday night. Both teams exchanged punts in the early going as the teams adjusted to play without the upper classmen.

It was the Dragon’s who capitalized on a big play by sophomore Grant Hall. Grant retrieved a low line drive punt near mid field and raced up the right side line for a 30 plus yard punt return. Fullback Casey Shockey ran the ball up the middle for a nice gain. With the defense pulled in it was Josh McMillon who rushed around the right side lead by a host of Dragon blockers for the score. Lane Maynard converted the extra point and the Dragon’s lead 7 to 0.

On the very next possession after a Cordova fumble it was again Josh McMillion who was on the receiving end of a long pass from quarterback Jason Smith for the 35 yard touchdown pass. Lane added the extra point and the Dragons were cruising right before the half 14 to zero.

Neither team was able to score in the second half as the Dragon line controlled the line of scrimmage.

Interceptions Hold Off Eagles in JV Victory
Collierville JV 3 ECS 0
9/22/03 @ ECS
By John DeVinney

It was a very tight game that was played at ECS field on September 22nd. The two teams had faced each other in a pre season scrimmage and knew each other well. Both defenses ruled the game with the respective offenses making enough mistakes that included turnovers and penalties to allow the game to be played between the 40 yard lines.

It was Collierville who took advantage of a solid punt return by Grant Hall and a couple of first downs with good runs by Casey Shockey and Josh McMillon that set up the lone score. This score came on a 37 yard field goal that just cleared the uprights by kicker Lane Maynard at the start of the second quarter.

The Dragon defense made the score stand up for the balance of the game. The defense played extremely well while the offense used the entire bench to get solid playing time experience for the entire team.

JV Rolls Over Panthers
Collierville JV 26 Bartlett 6
9/29/03 @ Osteen Field
By John DeVinney

This game was decided very early by the Dragon offense, but it was the solid line play of Collierville that controlled play on both sides of the ball, for the entire game.

The Dragons received the opening kickoff and marched down the field behind the solid running effort of the starting backfield to score a touchdown on a short run by Quarterback Jason Smith. Kicker Lane Maynard converted the extra point and the Dragons were in front 7 to 0.

Bartlett went three plays and out behind the solid play from the Collierville defense. A partially blocked punt put the Dragons in control near mid field. About 6 plays later it was Josh McMillon who scored a touchdown over the right side, fullback Casey Shockey set up the score with several solid runs. The kick failed and the Dragons increased their lead to 13 to 0. Bartlett aided by several Dragon un forced errors were able to move the ball down field but were stopped right before halftime.

Bartlett started the second half like they started the first half as they were not able to move the football. On 4th and long Josh McMillon burst through the line to block the Bartlett punt, Josh completed the play by scooping up the ball and making the 30 yard run into the end zone. The two point conversion attempt failed and the Dragons now led 19 to 0. It was Josh McMillion again who ended the Panthers next posession, as he intercepted a Panther pass and ran it to the Dragon 5 yard line. This time it was Mike Hammond who pounded the ball over for the score, the kick by Maynard worked and Collierville led 26 to 0.

After an exchange of possessions and some luck for the Panthers they were able to scratch out a touchdown that reduced the Dragons lead to 26 to 6. Collierville was able to use a little bit of trickery on the next drive as they hooked up with Taylor Walker for a 40 yard pass play. The game ended with the Dragons running out the clock.

JV Complete Perfect Season with Victory over Houston
Dragons 18 Mustangs 7
10/13/03 @ Houston
By John DeVinney

The junior varsity team completed their schedule with a perfect 5 wins against no losses. The game and opportunity for yet another win last week against Bolton was canceled due to poor field conditions and will not be played. The junior varsity team truly demonstrated the strength of the Collierville program as they dominated in every game.

The Dragons started this game with a non typical mistake. The dragon defense forced Houston to punt after a short drive. The short punt could not be fielded and rolled dead inside the 2 yard line. Three running plays set up a Dragon punt inside there own 10 yard line. The Mustangs obviously blew the punt coverage, so an alert Dragon called for the fake, but when the pass was short it gave Houston a first down on the Dragon 8 yard line. The Mustangs capitalized on three running plays to lead 7 to 0 and the Dragons trailed for the first time this season.

A determined Dragon offense used a balanced attack led this week by quarterback Jason Smith, tailback AJ Vollmer, wingbacks, Casey Shockey and Josh McMillon went to work. Jason, Josh and AJ had solid runs to set a third and long from the Mustang 32 yard line. Jason Smith hit AJ Vollmer in full stride on the right side and AJ easily beat the safety to the end zone for the score. Taylor Walker threw a key block near the end zone. Houston was not able to score any further in the half.

Collierville received the second half kickoff but were forced to punt on a 4th down play. Houston returned the punting miscue that the Dragon’s made in the first half as the Mustang’s fumbled the punt, a swarm of defenders recovered near the 50 yard line. 3 plays later it was Jason Smith connecting with Grant Hall for the 30 yard pass and run inside the Houston 4 yard line. It was AJ Vollmer who followed a crushing Dragon offensive line that blew a huge hole that put the Dragons ahead 12 to 7.

On the ensuing kickoff it was kicker Lane Maynard who made the defensive play of the season. The Houston kick returner broke through the kick coverage and Lane needed to make a stop in a wide open field. The coaches could not have diagramed the play any better. Lane executed a perfect “breakdown and tackle maneuver” that Lane finished with a body slam on the kick returner. Houston was forced to punt on downs by a determined Dragon defense that denied them the line of scrimmage.

This time it was a wide open Taylor Walker streaking down the right sideline who made the over the shoulder catch from quarterback Jason Smith. The play netted over 40 yards. 3 plays later it was AJ Vollmer again who followed the “Dragon Offensive Line Herd” for the easy score as the score blossomed to 18 to 7. The two point conversion pass was tipped away.

Houston desperately needed 2 scores fairly quickly so the Dragons again went to a prevent defense. This time it was Jason Spry who picked off the pass from the Houston Quarterback. The Dragons easily ran out the last two minutes of play to close out a perfect season of play.

Congratulations to the 2003 JV Dragons and there coaches for a season well played!
