Center Brad Pace calls out signals to #74 David
Adams & #50 Andrew White

Tonight’s
game was out of reach fairly quickly as the Whitehaven
Tiger’s showed off their skills against a battered
Dragon team. This game was played on a Halloween night
and it was the Tigers who got the treats with almost 500
yards of offense. . Unfortunately the Dragon defense was
“tricked” as many of the starters and some
of the reserves were banged up and saw limited or no action
on the night.
The
Tiger’s took the opening kickoff to the Dragon 25
yard line on a great kick return and a touchdown saving
tackle by kicker Brett Caldwell. Whitehaven scored on
their second play around the left side before the Dragon
defense got warmed up. The Dragon’s returned the
favor on a show of there own as Seniors Taylor
Brashear (13 carries for 70 yards) and Brian
Nevill ( 9 carries for 41 yards) got 4 straight
first downs setting up a first down at the Whitehaven
18 yard line.

It
was quarterback Brian
Hall that found Senior TE Todd
Madison over the right side of the defense,
Todd bulled his way over the defender for the score. The
extra point by Brett Caldwell was good as the Dragon’s
tied the game 7 to 7.
The
Dragon kick coverage was excellent on the next return
and Whitehaven started on there own 21 yard line. On the
first play it was Whitehaven that showed their stuff again
as a perfectly executed fly pattern and deep pass that
yielded an 81 yard touchdown. They blew the kick and the
score was now 13 to 7.After a quick possession the Dragon’s
were forced to punt. Whitehaven was able to mix their
running and passing attacks well all evening that yielded
another score and two point conversion. The score stood
at the close of the first quarter, before most of the
Whitehaven band got seated. It was Whitehaven 21 to the
Dragon’s 7.

The
second quarter was marred by numerous major penalties.
Both teams were hit numerous times with a flurry of flags
as tempers flared on both sides of the field. Neither
team was able to mount a drive and the teams entered halftime
with the Dragon’s trailing by the same 21 to 7 score.
It
was Whitehaven again with the 3rd quarter half way gone
that increased their lead to 29 to 7 on a long broken
field run around the right side. The Dragon’s just
could not get untracked until an interception by Lane
Maynard at the start of the fourth quarter set the Dragons
up with the ball near midfield.
The
Dragon “O” anchored by Brad
Pace at center, guards Andrew White &
Stanley Wilson, and tackles David
Adams and Scott
Eller fought hard late in the game for 2
more scores. Early in the 4th, Brian Hall linked up with
Senior Jon Scruggs for a 56 yard pass and run.
Jon
had 3 receptions on the night for 75 yards. Brian had
14 passing attempts, he completed 5 of those for 92 yards
and two touchdowns. Brian then hit Noel Moyes in the end
zone for the 2 point conversion and the score narrowed
to 29 to 15.

Whitehaven
again scored taking the momentum away from the Dragons
with the score ballooning to 35 to 15. The Dragon’s
mounted another drive very late in the contest with Brian
Hall doing most of the work. It was Brian around the right
side following the blocks of Madison and Brashear for
the 23 yard run in the last minute of the contest. Brian
ran for 70 yards on 7 attempts for the evening. Brian
Caldwell’s kick was good which made the final score
35 to 22.
Dustin Brasher, Clarence Featherstone and Brian Hall were
credited with 10 tackles a piece on the night to lead
the defensive effort. Lane Maynard followed with 5 tackles
with seniors J R Moorhead and Todd Madison with 4 tackles
each.
The loss put the 7 wins against 3 losses Collierville
Dragons with a fourth place finish in the very competitive
Region 8 of Class 5A. The Dragon’s make the playoffs
and will play at Bolton, the Champion of Region 7 this
Friday, November 7th.
