Freshman Dragons Control Cougars
@ Munford High School 21 - 7
Article by: Jack Schuerman

The Freshman game started a little late on a stormy night but Collierville was ready to play. Munford received the opening kickoff and advanced the ball downfield. After Munford advanced to the Dragon side of the 50, Collierville's defense stiffened up. Michael Drew Moyes made the first Dragon tackle behind the line of scrimmage. Munford did manage one more first down but with the help of an illegal procedure penalty and consecutive tackles in the backfield, Collierville took possession at their own forty.

Collierville's ground game, led by Johnny McCray, gained two first downs. A Dragon fumble gave Munford the ball. After one first down, the defense held and Munford was faced with fourth down. A fake punt was stopped by Bart Smith and Collierville received the ball in Munford territory.

Relying on the running skill of McCray, the Dragons moved the ball. Facing a first and goal, McCray burst up the middle behind the great blocking from Toll, Huffman, and Brasher scoring the first Dragon touchdown of the season. Boomer Mize used the end around to add the two point conversion and Collierville led 8 to 0.

Chivas Jones made the tackle on the ensuing kickoff and the Collierville defense went to work. Moyes and Bart Smith stopped the run for no gain. After stops by Smith and Zack Jackson, Munford was forced to punt. McCray returned the punt and for good yardage on a couple of plays. Chivas Jones followed with 3 runs and the offense scored around the right side. The conversion attempt was stopped by a fumble and the Dragons led 14 to 0. Although Munford fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Collierville ran out of time at the half.

Following good downfield blocking, Andrew Richmond returned the second half kickoff to the 48 yard line. However, the Dragons lost the ball a few plays later and Munford recovered. A strong defense led by Eric Smith and Russ Taylor forced Munford to punt. Collierville started a drive with strong runs and the game entered the fourth quarter. The drive ended with Johnny McCray going left for the score. The conversion pass was incomplete and the Dragons kicked off to Munford.

A short kick gave Munford good field position but they couldn't take advantage of it as the Dragons forced them to punt. A final turnover allowed Munford one more chance to score. With 1:22 left on the clock, Munford managed to break the goal line and converted the extra point. Collierville then ran out the clock and went home with a 20 to 7 victory over Munford.
