The Dragons won the
toss and chose to receive the ball
and protect the north end zone. The
kickoff sailed out of the end zone
and QB Brian
Hall brought the offense
to the line, first and ten on the
20 yard line. The first play of the
season was a dive up the middle by
FB Cody
McMeans for 5 yards.
Two more running plays netted four
yards and the Dragons were faced with
fourth and one on their own 29 yard
line. Jr HB Noel Moyes
followed FB McMeans
and HB Jordan
Pedron on
a double power off left tackle for
3 yards and a first down. The Dragons
continued to drive and found itself
facing a third down and three at their
own 44. QB Brian
Hall ran option left
keeper behind Matt Fields
and Nash
Jackson, ran over the
safety and with excellent downfield
blocking by TE Grant Hall
and Noel Moyes, was
finally brought down at the Gallatin
9 yard line. A motion penalty on the
next play set the Dragons back 5 yards
to the 14 yard line. A perfect pull
block by Andrew
White enabled HB Noel
Moyes to follow T Scott
Eller and TE Grant Hall
off the left side down to the Green
Wave 2.5 yard line. The Green Wave
defense dug in for a goal line stand
and Pedron
carried the ball off right tackle
to the 1.5 yard line. On fourth and
goal, the Dragons called on Moyes
to follow Pedron
and McMeans
off left tackle and into the end zone
…..with the big men, Matt
Fields – Scott
Eller – Nash
Jackson – Garrison
Smith moving the entrenched
Green Wave defense. With 5:46 remaining
in the first quarter, Senior K Brett
Caldwell’s PAT
was good and the Dragons led 7 –
0 on their initial drive of the season
.
Brett
Caldwell’s kickoff
was returned 28 yards to the 38 yard
line where outstanding special teams
tackle by Vincent Pirani and
Jason Smith stopped
the Gallatin kick returner cold. After
a series of plays in which the Dragons
defense was handling the Green Wave
offense, Gallatin was faced with fourth
down and less than a yard at the Collierville
40 yard line. Running a single power
option left , the Gallatin QB and
RB jammed each other in the backfield
resulting in a fumble. In a play that
the Dragon defense stuffed, the Gallatin
QB picked up his own fumble and broke
loose on a 40 yard broken play run
for a touchdown. The PAT was good
and the score was tied, 7 - 7 , with
1:42 remaining in the opening quarter.
Brian
Hall received the ensuing
kickoff at the Dragon three and carried
it to the 32 yard line for a 29 yard
return. Following a dead ball penalty,
the Dragons started with first and
fifteen at their own 27 yard line.
The Dragons moved the ball to the
45 yard line and on the last play
of the first quarter Hall
hit senior WR Taylor
Walker for a thirteen
yard gain down to the Gallatin 42.
Next, excellent pass protection enabled
Hall to find WR Jonathon
Abel for ten more yards,
down to the 27. With consistent blocking
by seniors Jordan
Whitten, Andrew
White, Nash
Jackson, and Scott
Eller, the Dragons moved
the ball to the Green Wave 8 yard
line where the drive stalled. A 25
yard field goal attempt narrowly missed
and though dominated by the Dragons
on the drive, the Green Wave remained
tied with the Dragons, 7 – 7.
The Green Wave took
over on the 20 yard line and could
only manage to move the ball to the
48 yard line where on third and six,
junior DB Jason Smith
smashed the Gallatin receiver on a
sure first down pass play, thus forcing
Gallatin to punt. The Dragons took
over first and ten at their own 9
yard line following the punt out of
bounds. Brian Hall ran option left
and followed FB Cody
McMeans through the hole,
broke free and raced down the visitor’s
sideline for an apparent 91 yard TD
run. Inexplicably and questionably,
Hall
was called for offensive face masking
and the play was called back. The
ball was placed on the Dragon 29 yard
line as the penalty was from the spot
of the supposed foul. A dead ball
penalty moved the ball back an additional
5 yards and on second and15 from the
24 yard line, Hall
spotted a streaking Jordan
Pedron who was leveled
with a “no choice but knock
the receiver down” play by the
safety at the Gallatin 35 yard line
on a potential TD pass play. With
the penalty, it was Dragon ball on
their own 48, first and ten and junior
QB Jason Smith came
in to run the offense. Smith coolly
moved the offense and gained a first
down to the Gallatin 41 where he turned
the offense back over to Brian Hall.
The Gallatin defense held and senior
Brock
Merryman’s punt
found its way into the end zone, setting
up Gallatin with first down on their
own 20 yard line. The Dragon defense
held and forced the Green Wave to
punt. The first half ended on a pass
completion to senior WR Taylor
Walker for a pick up
of 8 yards. The Dragons clearly dominated
the first half yet were not able to
put the points on the board. Halftime:
Collierville 7 Gallatin 7.
Brett
Caldwell’s second
half kickoff sailed 5 yards into the
end zone setting Gallatin up on their
20 with first and ten. On the second
play from scrimmage, the Green Wave
QB ran option right keeper and broke
into the Dragon secondary on an apparent
71 yard TD scamper. Only a determined
and outstanding tackle by DB Brock
Merryman at the Collierville
19 yd line saved the TD. The Dragon
defense then rose to the occasion.
First a two yard loss led by Andrew
White and Kevin McDonel,
then a high/low tag-team stop by Scott
Eller and Casey
Shockey and finally a pass
play stopped for one yard gain by
Shockey and
Jonathon
Abel forced Gallatin
to play for field position by pooch
punting from the Collierville 35 yard
line.
With first and ten
at the 14, the Dragon offensive line
opened up a huge hole and FB Cody
McMeans rambled 32 yards
to the 50. On third down, Brian
Hall passed to TE Grant
Hall for a 10 yard gain to
the Green Wave 35. A few plays later,
an illegal chop block by the Dragons
moved the ball back to the 44 where
Brock
Merryman punted to the
Gallatin 10 yard line. Primarily running
and passing out of a shotgun set,
the Green Wave moved the ball to midfield.
On the ninth play of the drive, apparently
Casey Shockey and
the rest of the defense said “enough
is enough”. Shockey
broke through the line and hit the
Gallatin QB just as he released the
football setting up a perfect interception
by safety Layne Maynard
who returned the interception to the
50.
A holding call negated
a 22 yard run by Brian
Hall and moved the ball
back to the Collierville 42 where
the offense could not find its rhythm.
Merryman’s
punt hit a Gallatin player’s
helmet at the 30 yard line and bounced
out of bounds at the 40…a likely
net gain for Gallatin of at least
20 yards. Again out of the shotgun,
the Green Wave QB ran option right
with a perfect downfield pitch to
his trailing back who rambled 26 yards
before an outstanding hustle play
by LB Andrew
White caused a fumble
which White found convenient to recover
himself at the Collierville 34 yard
line. Additionally, defensive tackle
Ben
Huff had hustled downfield
and was involved in the “secondary”
tackle on the running back which enabled
White
to grab the fumble. It appeared the
Dragons were going to take control
of the game but on the next offensive
series the Dragons fumbled back to
the Green Wave at the Collierville
44. Five plays later, the Green Wave
punched it into the end zone for a
touchdown. PAT was good and with 9:25
left left in the game, Gallatin led
14 – 7.
