Germantown won
the toss and deferred till the
2nd half. Deep receiving for
CHS was Brian
Hall and Noel
Moyes. Hall returned
it for 15 yards out to the 24.
The Dragons couldn’t get
anything going in the 1st offensive
series being hit by 3 penalties.
Hall took a
brutal hit and had to leave
the game but returned the following
series. From the 26, Brock
Merryman was set
to punt. Upback Jonathan
Abel called the
audible to fake punt. The snap
came to Abel.
He threw down the left sideline
to Taylor
Walker for a 26
gain. Walker made a great diving
catch to get the 1st down. The
stiff Red Devil “D”
held for the next 3 plays and
forced a punt. Brock
Merryman booted
it deep into the endzone 49
yards dowfield.
GHS took over
at the 20. All night, the Red
Devil offense ran a tight wishbone
attack. The Dragons forced a
punt their 1st defensive series.
Big plays were made by CB
Brock Merryman,.
NG Lane Halfacre,
& LB Cody
McMeans. DT Scott
Eller ended the drive when he
pursued down the line and knocked
the ball carrier out of bounds
on the Dragon sideline.
Taking over
at their own 26 the CHS passing
game showed a flash of brilliance.
On 3rd and 7, QB Hall
found SE Jonathan
Abel on a left
side slant for a 21 yd. gain.
Again the offense sputtered
and called on Merryman
to pin the Red Devils back in
their territory. Merryman
put into the endzone for a 52
yard boomer. Ch. Cox’s
decision to bring on rookie
kicking Ch. Robert Billings
has paid off. Ch. Billings
has molded Merryman
from a mediocre punter into
a potent Dragon weapon. He is
averaging 43.8 yds. per punt
in his last 5 tries.
The Red Devils
put it in gear the next series
and drove 80 yards for the 1st
score. With great defensive
stops by DL Garrison
Smith, LB Andrew
White, and CB Josh
McMillon, Collierville
still couldn’t control
the run up the middle. Punching
it in from the 3, Germantown
scores with 8:35 in the 2nd
qtr. for a 7-0 lead.
After an18 yd.
kickoff return by Noel
Moyes, the “O”
began the Dragon’s best
drive of the night. QB Hall
was outstanding. Behind a great
block from DT Scott
Eller, Hall
optioned left and kept it for
a 26 yd. gain. Next RB Cody
McMeans followed
DT Nash
Jackson for an
8 yarder. Hall
fakes the handoff and follows
DT Nash
Jackson for 14
more yards. Hall
had another gain for 14 yds.
then found TE Garrett
Bizzell over the middle
for a 1st down at the 1 yd.
Line. The Dragons in a wishbone,
gave it to RB Noel Moyes
over LG Jordan
Whitten for the
TD. Kicker Brett
Caldwell’s
XP was good and the score tied
7-7 with 3:46 in the 2nd qtr.
Caldwell’s
kickoff landed in the end zone
for a touchback. Germantown
was unable to return any kickoffs
on the night because of Caldwell’s
touchbacks. On one kickoff the
ball sailed passed the end zone.
The Dragon defense held and
forced another punt. DL Dejuan
Sharp and Taylor Krag
made great defensive stops.
The drive ended after CB Josh
McMillon’s tackle
at the line of scrimmage. After
the punt the Dragon’s
offense operating with a short
clock, couldn’t move the
ball. The 1st half ended with
a 7–7 tie.
After the Caldwell
touchback to begin the 2nd half,
the Red Devil’s quickly
went 80 yards for another score
with only 1 minute 30 seconds
running off the clock. The XP
made it 14-7 Red Devils.
After the kickoff
and short return by Harrison
Bizzell, Collierville’s
offense took over at the Dragon
24. The offense was moving the
ball with great blocks from
OT Scott
Eller and OG Jordan
Whitten. After
a 9 yd. run by Moyes,
the Dragon’s throw the
1st interception of the night
on a long pass down the right
side at the Germantown 29.
GHS came out
and continued to pound it up
the middle by the 3 back attack.
CHS got big “D”
stops from DL Nash
Jackson and Kevin
McDonnel. The Dragons
hard hitting forced a fumble
that was recovered by the home
team. It was hard to tell who
stripped the ball in this “gang
tackling” play.
Taking over
around midfield, Hall
again lead what appeared to
be a promising drive. With excellent
fakes and runs, Hall
ran 4 more times for 40 yards,
with help from DL Garrison
Smith. On 2nd and 8
from the GHS 18, the Dragons
throw into the end zone found
the hands of a Red Devil DB.
The pick was returned to midfield.
With momentum
building, the GHS running game
continued punishing the Dragons.
The ball was punched in for
a 1 yd. score. The XP made it
21-7.
The kickoff
return was brought out by Lane
Maynard to the 31.
Again Collierville was unable
to move the ball and had to
call on punter Merryman.
Another high 45 yarder sent
the Red Devils deep in their
territory to end the 3rd qtr.
The 4th qtr.
began as did the 3rd. On a 60
yd. romp, Germantown scored.
The XP kick was no good and
the score is 27-7 with 11:08
in the game.
On following
kickoff, Brian
Hall went 69 yards
to the Red Devil’s 31.
A facemask penalty against Germantown
put the ball inside the 20.
On the 17, Hall,
on a QB keeper, weaved his way
into the end zone for a TD.
Caldwell’s XP was good
and gap in the score was closed
to 27-14.
Again kicker
Caldwell
kicked another for a touchback.
On the 1st play of the series,
the Red Devil got a long gain
down the left side to the Dragon
23. On the next play, right
up the gut again, GHS scores.
They go for 2 over left guard
but DL Scott
Eller makes the
tackle short of the goal line.
It is now 33-14 Germantown.
Dragon’s
Noel Moyes
returned the kickoff out to
the 30. Having to score 3 times
in 8 minutes appeared almost
impossible but the offense buckled
down and marched quickly down
the field for a TD. With hardnosed
running by RB Cody
McMeans and QB
Hall,
the Dragons make it inside the
Germantown 5. Then RB McMeans
took a handoff over right tackle
for the TD. With Matt
Clark’s snap
and Jonathan
Abel holding, Caldwell
splits the uprights again and
the score is 33-21.
After the ensuing
kickoff, tempers ran high. With
fists flying and big defensive
pile ups, the Red Devils kept
it on the ground eating up the
clock. The hard hitting Dragon
“D” stripped the
ball and recovered its 2nd fumble
of the night at midfield. They
take over at the 49 . Hall
runs it for 15 yds. out of bounds
to stop the clock. Feeling the
pressure to score 2 more times,
the Dragons stall on 4th down.
Germantown took over and ran
the clock out for the victory.
