The Collierville Dragons opened the 2005 football season with a resounding 38-7 victory over the visiting Hamilton Wildcats. This is a reload season for Coach Paul Cox as he has had to replace a number of two and three year starters from last year’s Region Championship team. Though the game was not perfect, the Dragons appear to be poised to achieve another successful season. The 2005 model looks sporty and fast…

The Dragons received the opening kickoff and Jr RB Jason Goins returned it to the 34 yard line. Sr QB Jason Smith led the Dragons on a twelve play drive that was highlighted by quick read pass and run from Smith to Sr WR Joseph Crabtree who bulled his way to the 4 yd line. The drive bogged down and the Dragons settled for a 3 point play from the foot of Sr Lane Maynard. The Dragons led 3-0 with 5:24 left in the first quarter.

On the following kickoff, Sr Chris Collins and Jr Jacob Hunter teamed up to drop the Hamilton kick returner at the 17 yd line. On fourth down, the snapper sent the ball over the Wildcat punter’s head. The punter kicked the ball out of the back of the endzone in an attempt to salvage 5 points by giving up 2. The play resulted in an unsportsmanlike penalty for kicking the ball giving the Dragons first and goal at the Hamilton 1 yd line. Sr RB Noel Moyes delivered the first TD of the season for the Dragons, and following Maynard’s PAT the Dragons were up 10-0.

Following the kickoff, the Dragon Defense took the field and immediately dropped the Wildcats for a one yard loss led by SRs Lane Maynard and Grant Hall. Two plays later, Hall split a double team and speed rushed the QB for a sack and a loss of nearly 10 yards on the play. On 4th down, the Wildcat punter almost broke free for a first down and more, but SR Noel Moyes took on the lead blocker and immediately spun in the opposite direction and logrolled the surprised Wildcat punter short of the first down marker in an outstanding instinctive play.

Taking over at the 18 yard line, the Dragons moved the ball down to the 3 yd line. On second down, QB Jason Smith was afforded outstanding pass protection from Jr Blake Reed, Sr DeJuan Sharp, Sr Collin Ring, and Jr Joe White and hit Maynard on beautiful out pattern for 6 points. Maynard’s PAT was good and the Dragons led 17-0 with 11:55 remaining in the first half.

On the following kickoff, Soph Lineman Nathan Ring recovered another Hamilton fumble setting the offense up with first down at the 20 yd line. On second down, Moyes made an excellent run down to the 4 yd line with outstanding line blocking by Sr Collin Ring, Jr Blake Reed and downfield blocking by Grant Hall and Chris Collins. Jr RB Brett Rogers scored from 4 yds out for another Dragon TD. Again, Maynard’s PAT was good and the Dragons appeared to be coasting with a 24-0 lead with 10:30 remaining in the half.

On the following Dragon kick-off, Jr Jacob Hunter dropped the Hamilton return man at the 25 yd line and followed that play up with an outstanding rush on the QB on third down that forced the Wildcat QB to throw the ball away forcing 4th down. Following the Wildcat punt, the Dragons went on the offense at their own 42 yd line. On second down, the Hamilton LB sat on the short pass route and stepped in front of a Jason Smith pass intended for Noel Moyes and barely made it into the endzone. Sr WR Chris Collins showed his speed in an outstanding hustle play by nearly tracking down the LB who had at least a 15 or 20 yd head start. The Hamilton PAT was good and the score was now 24-7 with 8:14 remaining.

After trading fumbles on consecutive plays, the Dragons put together a seven play drive that got bogged down in miscues and penalties. Following the Dragon punt, the Wildcats put together the semblance of a drive and moved the ball down to the Dragon 14 yd line where Sr LB Josh McMillon sacked the QB to end the half.

On the second half kick-off Soph Chivas Jones stopped the Hamilton return man at the 38 yd line saving a potentially bigger gain for the Wildcats. Hamilton wasn’t able to move the ball and on fourth down, the punter was flushed from the pocket and sacked giving the Dragons first down at the 38 yd line. After an 8 yd run by Rogers and a great run by QB Jason Smith on the option keeper, Noel Moyes punched it in from 6 yds out. Maynard’s PAT was good and the Dragons led 31-7 at the 9:01 mark in the third quarter.

On the kick-off, Jr Eric Burrus and Soph Bart Smith hammered the Wildcat return man at the 26 yd line, where two plays later Jr DB Conner Simmons stripped the Hamilton running back of the pigskin setting up Sr Josh McMillon for the fumble recovery. On first down from the 41, QB Jason Smith hit TE Grant Hall for a big gainer down to the 17. Running from the shotgun, Smith fired a pass into the endzone where WR Joseph Crabtree nearly made a circus catch. Following Smith’s scramble to the 12 and Jr Zack Palmer’s run to the 3, JR Jason Goins scored up the middle behind outstanding line play from Jr Laine Halfacre, Sr Dejuan Sharp, Jr Joe White, Jr Blake Reed, and Sr Collin Ring. Maynard’s PAT was good and the Dragon led increased to 38-7 with 5:35 in the third quarter.

On the kickoff, Maynard made an outstanding touchdown saving tackle and the Dragon defense was able to finally stop the Hamilton offensive march and to preserve the final score of 38-7. The remainder of the game saw Coach Cox move a number of players into the game giving them invaluable experience that will benefit the Dragons in their quest for another Region Championship.

Overall, the Dragons dominated the Wildcats before another packed house. The Dragons finished with 16 first downs compared to Hamilton’s 6 first downs and a total of 211 yds rushing for a net average of 4.7 yds per running play and a total offense of 261 yds versus Hamilton’s total offense of 139 yards. The Dragon offense used a total of 10 different ball carriers and 5 different receivers in spreading the offense around. The Dragon D put together an exciting package running out of the 3-4 set utilizing the speed and aggressiveness of its defensive ends and linebacking corp. Lane Maynard’s solid kicking and punting was a bright spot in the Dragon special teams play and will enable the team to build around this stability. Next, Collierville entertains Central with a 7:00 pm kickoff at Collierville’s Herman Osteen Field. Come early and join in the pre-game tailgating and festivities.
