Although not a thing of beauty, the Freshman Dragons opened the season with a 12-10 victory over their rival the Houston Mustangs.  On the opening drive the Dragon’s went three and out and were forced to punt.

On Houston’s first possession they drove the ball to the Collierville 25 yard line and on fourth down converted a 32 yard field goal attempt putting the Mustangs up 3-0.

Brady Ray took the ensuing kick off and was tackled immediately at the Collierville five yard line.  Lane Farrell took the first down hand off for four yards to the nine, giving the Dragons a little breathing room.  On second down Taylor Rowland handed off to Grayson Hinte.  Following the block of Lane Farrell, Cody Jackson, & Houston Kowing, Hinte burst into the secondary and after nearly being tackled for a ten yard gain, broke away from the Mustang tacklers and sprinted 91 yards for a Dragon touchdown.  The PAT was wide left.

Following the kick-off, a long Mustang gain was negated by a block in the back call.  On third down Taylor Harris picked up a Houston fumble and returned it 20 yards to the Mustang’s 36 yd line. After  three rushes the Dragon’s fourth down attempt fell a ½ yard short and the ball went over on downs at the Mustang’s 28. During the next Houston drive, Cim Ford, Chase Mann, and Taylor Harris all made strong tackles.  After recovering their own fumble on third down, Houston was forced to punt.

The Dragons fumbled and Houston recovered at the 23. The Mustang’s were pushed back to the 29 yard line due to a holding call and the following pass attempt was intercepted by Cim Ford at the 25.

A quick six yard gain by Grayson Hinte and a seven yarder by Dennis McNeil  gave the Dragons a first down and the Dragons saw the first half end leading 6-3. The second half kickoff went out of bounds giving Houston possession at their 35 yard line.  The Mustangs began to mount a drive.  Chad Brown, Chase Mann and Austin Hiatt made tackles to slow the Houston momentum.  After a Dragons timeout a 15 yard penalty on the Dragons gave the Mustangs another first down.   The drive stalled after a tackle for an eight yard loss by Dennis McNeil and Brady Ray.  On third down Chris Porcaro disrupted a pass attempt and the Mustangs were forced to punt.  The punt went out of bounds at the Dragons 13 yard line.

Two short runs by Grayson Hinte and Lane Farrell were followed by a 58 yard run by Dennis McNeil who was tackled at the Mustangs 23 yard line.  Two plays later Lane Farrell went off tackle on a counter and gave the Dragons a first and goal on the nine yard line.  The third quarter ended with the Dragon’ still leading 6-3.  It took four plays for the Dragons to get into the end zone with Taylor Rowland going behind the left side on a fourth and 3.  The two point attempt was unsuccessful.  The Dragons lead was now 12-3.

The Mustangs took the kick off back to the 35 yard line and eventually drove to the Dragons 23 where Chris Porcaro recovered a fumble giving the Dragons possession. The Dragons could not advance the ball recovering their own fumble for a six yard loss that was followed by two illegal procedure penalties placing them deep in their own territory.  After a timeout the Dragon’s coaching staff decided on a quick kick on second down catching the Mustangs off guard.  The punt put the  ball on the Mustangs 46 yard line.

The following Houston drive provided one of the most interesting plays of the night .  With little time remaining the Mustangs opened up their air attack and on two completions reached the Dragon 13 yard line.  After three incomplete passes that were broken up by Grayson Hinte, Chase Mann and Cim Ford it came down to a fourth down pass play.  The pass appeared to be knocked down by a Dragon player but then ricochet off of a Mustang’s players helmet and fell into the hands of another Houston player resulting in a touchdown.  The PAT was good and the Dragons lead was now a slim two point margin.

With 50 seconds left Houston attempted an onside kick that was recovered by Chase Mann.  The Dragon’s were able to take two snaps and run the clock out for a hard fought 12-10 victory. Offensively the Dragons were lead by Grayson Hinte’s 91 yard touchdown run and  Dennis McNeil’s 58 yard burst. Taylor Rowland and Lane Farrell contributed with their steady play and critical runs.  On the Defensive side Chase Mann lead the way with several tackles along with Taylor Harris, Chad Brown and Austin Hiatt.  Highlights in the secondary included an interception by Cim Ford and a fumble recovery by Chris Porcaro.

FRESHMAN VICTORIOUS WHEN IT COUNTS

COLLIERVILLE 13 BOLTON 6
ARTICLE BY JAMES HINTE
9/7/06 @ BOLTON H.S.

The Freshman Dragons gained redemption after a Jamboree loss to the Bolton Wildcats. It was a Collierville offensive effort that started strong and finished strong with a whole lot of defense in between as the Freshman Dragons recorded their second win of the season.

The Bolton Wildcats started the game with a short kickoff to Chase Mann who was tackled at the Dragons 37 yard line.  Grayson Hinte took the first hand off for an 11yard gain.  Lane Farrell went off tackle for five yards to midfield.  On second down Hinte went through a huge hole created by Austin Hiatt and Cody Jackson for 15 more yards quickly putting the Dragons on the Wildcats 35 yard line.  Dennis McNeil carried on the next three plays for 12 yards producing another Dragon first down.  After two short gains by Grayson Hinte,  Dennis McNeil powered through the middle for a 12 yard gain down to the Bolton 11 yard line.  Hinte took the following handoff to the right and scored untouched for the Dragons first score.  The extra point was good and the Dragons led 7-0.

Bolton took the kickoff and after a ten yard gain Chase Mann made the tackle at the Wildcats 45 yard line.  An off sides call on the Dragons put the ball on the 50 yard line.  After a 11 play drive down to the Dragons 4 Taylor Harris made a solo tackle creating fourth and goal and with ball on the two yard line the Wildcats decided to go for it  Their run over the left side was stopped as Dennis McNeil shot into the backfield for a two yard loss.  Jacob Ford and Houston Kowing all had strong tackles to slow the Wildcats.  Cim Ford and Clayton France disrupted long pass plays by Bolton. The Dragons took over on downs on their own four yard line.

Deep in their own territory the Dragons played it safe and after two short gains followed by a third down no gain, Collierville was forced to punt.  The punt from the end zone was downed on the Dragons 34 yard line.

The Dragons defense showed some life on their next series with Dennis McNeil getting a solo stop and Blain Whitehead knocking down a pass in the end zone.  After a Bolton first down Dennis McNeil produced one of the defensive highlights of the night tipping the Wildcats pass twice and finished the play with an acrobatic interception as he fell to his back on the nine yard line.

Grayson Hinte took the hand off from Taylor Rowland and cut the ball up field for seven yards, however the Dragons could not convert on third down and punted the ball out to the 43 yard line.

Bolton ran two plays for a quick first down and with only seconds left in the first half looked like they were going to score.  The Bolton running back took the pitch and broke a run to the outside and was stopped at the two yard line by safety Cim Ford.  The Dragons led at half time 7-0.

The Dragons kicked off to start the second half.  The kick was taken at the 24 and Jonathon West made the stop at the 33 yard line.  Chad Brown had three tackles in the series with Houston Kowing, Nate Reese and Chris Suzore making stops as Bolton mounted a drive.  On third down and 10 Clayton France made a tackle in the backfield for a 5 yard loss.  Once again Bolton made the decision to go for a first on fourth down and Cim Ford made them pay for it.  The defensive line rushed the quarterback and under pressure he made an errant pass that was intercepted at the 20.  Cim Ford returned the interception 38 yards to the Bolton 42 giving the Dragons their best field position of the night.

After a hard fought two yard gain the dragons fumbled and were unable to capitalize on the turnover.

Jacob Ford had two tackles on the next series and the Wildcats punted the ball to the Dragons 35.

Hinte took the first down handoff and went off the right side behind Lane Farrell for a 40 yard gain and the Dragons were on the Bolton 25 as the third quarter ended.  After the teams changed sides Lane Farrell bulled his way for four yards and Grayson Hinte picked up six more spinning out of two Wildcat tackles.  The drive stalled at the 12 yard line and the field goal attempt was just wide left as the Collierville fans all thought the attempt was good.

The Dragons defense stepped up with Houston Kowing stopping the Wildcats for a five yard loss back to the 15.  Two false start penalties on Bolton put them on the five and after a nine yard gain Collierville declined a block in the back call to set up third down and 16.  The third down pass was incomplete and the Wildcats punted.  The ball was kicked to the Dragons 44 yard line and appeared to be rolling to a stop when Grayson Hinte picked up the ball for a return.  Chris Porcaro and Chris Suzore laid out two wildcats allowing Grayson Hinte to break to the left sideline for a 21 yard return to the Bolton 35.

After gains of seven and one yard the third down pass was incomplete.  With the ball on the Bolton 28 the Dragons coaching staff decided to go for it but Lane Farrell was stopped a half yard short of the first down marker.

With just over two minutes left in the game and the Dragons clinging on to a 7-0 lead, the Wildcats took the first play from scrimmage and ran 72 yards for their first score.  Deciding to go for two and the possible win the Wildcats appeared to be successful however the play was negated by a false start penalty.  They decided to kick on their second attempt and missed the PAT giving the Dragons a breath of life.

The onside kick was snagged by Chase Mann and downed at the Dragons 49.  With the clock below two minutes the Dragons were content to run the ball.  Lane Farrell took the first hand off for two yards to the Bolton 49.  On the next play the Dragons had some of their own late game excitement as Grayson Hinte followed the block of the Center Austin Hiatt, cut to his left and out ran the Wildcats defenders for a 49 yard touchdown run.  The PAT was unsuccessful but the   Dragons were up 13-6.

Collierville decided to direct the kick off out of bounds to prevent a possible long return and it was placed on the Bolton 40 yard line.  On the next play Jonathon West and Nate Reese combined on the tackle for a three yard loss.  On second down, Cim Ford, and Chase Mann stopped the Wildcats receiver after a short gain.  The game ended on a sweep left as Chris Emeagwal, Jonathon West and Lane Farrell swarmed the Bolton running back for a loss.  For the second week in a row the Dragons fought to the end to preserve victory.

On the offense Grayson Hinte had 139 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns.  Dennis McNeil had an outstanding game on defense with 6 tackles and an interception.  Cim Ford had an interception for the second game in a row and a touchdown saving tackle to end the first half.  Other defensive standouts were Clayton France, Taylor Harris, Jacob Ford, Chad Brown and Houston Kowing.  Chase Mann showed good hands and tackling on special team

After struggling to hold on to victory in their first two games the Dragons put together a strong performance in all aspects of the game with a 21 – 0 shutout win over the Arlington Tigers.

The Tigers took the opening kick off to their own twenty nine yard line.  After two quick first downs on their first four plays that put the ball on the Dragons forty three, the Collierville defense came alive.  A first down pass was knocked down by Brady Ray and on second and ten Chad Brown and Dennis McNeil dropped the Tiger running back for a one yard loss setting up third and long.  On the following play Nate Reese came barreling through the middle and sacked the Tiger’s QB for a ten yard loss.  Houston Kowing made two stops during the series.  On fourth and twenty-one the Tigers punted to the Dragons ten yard line Grayson Hinte returned it to the twenty two.

After a short gain on first down Taylor Rowland connected with Dennis McNeil for a thirteen yard pass play.  Grayson Hinte took the next three plays around the right side for gains of nine, twelve and fourteen yards and the Dragons were on the Tiger’s twenty nine yard line.  After a short gain by Chad Brown off left tackle the Dragons went back to work on the right side with ten yard gains by Dennis McNeil and Grayson Hinte. This put the ball on the eight yard line and the first quarter came to a close.  On the first play of the second quarter Hinte followed the block of Nate Reese and went around the left side for a Dragons touchdown.  Joe Montgomery’s PAT was good and Collierville was up 7-0.

The Dragons kick off went out of bounds and the Tigers started their drive at the thirty five.  Taylor Harris and Ben Kuntzman provided the spark on this drive with Harris having three tackles and Kuntzman making two stops.  After a 27 yard gain and the Tigers threatening at the Dragons twenty two Ben Kuntzman dropped on a fumble giving the ball back to the Collierville offense.  Houston Kowing, Nate Reese and Jacob Ford also combined for a big stop on the drive.

With 5:38 seconds left in the half the Dragons mounted a 12 play drive with Lane Farrel carrying three times for gains of six, twelve and four yards.  Dennis McNeil picked up eight yards on two carries and Grayson Hinte had four runs for eighteen yards.  On the drive Taylor Rowland hit Cim Ford for a 16 yard pass play.  With less than a minute the Dragons had third down and one at the twelve however there was a fumble on the snap and it was fourth down and three at the fourteen.  Collierville called a time out and after a brief discussion decided to go for it on fourth down.  QB Rowland took the snap and rolled to his left looking for an open receiver.  Arlington had the play covered well and Rowland tucked the ball and went in for the score.  Joe Montgomery kicked the PAT through the up rights and the Dragons extended their lead to 14-0.

The Tigers nearly got on the scoreboard taking the first play from scrimmage thirty two yards to the Dragons thirty three yard line with Clayton France making the tackle.  Lane Farrel made a stop after an eight yard gain and on second down it looked like the Dragons were going to drop the Tigers for a loss but the quarterback eluded the Dragons pursuit and gained nine yards to the Dragons seventeen.  On the next play Arlington connected on a pass however the receiver fumbled the ball and Cim Ford gained possession at the eight  with the half ending and the Dragons on top 4-0.

Dennis McNeil took the second half kick off at the twenty and returned the ball to the thirty three yard line.  Lane Farrel pick up three yards and McNeil got the first down with a seven yard gain.  After a two yard gain Taylor Rowland passed to Clayton France for ten yards and another first down at the Arlington forty five.  Grayson Hinte took the next play for thirteen yards following the block of Cody Jackson.  On first down at the tiger thirty two, Hinte went up the middle behind the blocking of Austin Hiatt and Houston Kowing, made a move to his left burned the Arlington secondary for a touchdown.  Joe Montgomery was good on the PAT and the score was 21-0.

The Tigers appeared to be rattled on their next possession fumbling the first snap for a two yard loss, no gain on second with Chris Suzore and Dennis McNeil combining for the tackle and the ball was snapped over the quarterbacks head for a six yard loss on third down.  The Tigers punted and Hinte was hit immediately at the Dragons forty eight.

After a holding call on first down creating first and twenty two, Collierville ran a reverse to Brady Ray for a seven yard gain.  A short run by Lane Farrel followed by a six yard completion by Rowland was not enough for a first down and the quarter ended.  After switching sides the Dragons lined up for the punt and appeared to be set for a fake punt however the play clock expired and the Dragons were backed up five yards for delay of game.  The Tigers punt returner took the kick on the run and sprinted down the left side line for a big gain.  Grayson Hinte came from behind on the return and was poised to assist on the tackle when instead he stripped the ball from the Tigers and took off the other way and was finally tackled at the fifty yard line.

Hinte took the pitch from Rowland around the right end for twenty eight yards followed by a three yard run off tackle to the Tiger nineteen.  McNeil took the next three snaps for nine, five and two yards giving the Dragons third and goal at the three.  The third down pass play was intercepted and returned to the Collierville eighteen.

After a twelve yard gain for a first down, the tigers lost sixteen on the next two plays setting up third down and twenty six.  Chris Emeagwal and Clayton France made the stop on third down and with time running out the Tigers went for it on fourth and long and nearly made it however the Dragons took over on downs at the Arlington forty yard line.

Taylor Rowland took the snap and followed a big block by Grayson Hinte for a twelve yard gain.  The Dragons took three more snaps and time expired giving Collierville the shut out 21-0.

The win was the best all around effort of the year for the Dragons with the defense making big stops all night behind the contributions of Houston Kowing, Nate Reese, Taylor Harris, Dennis McNeil and Ben Kuntzman.  Cim Ford picked up his third turnover of the year after gaining possession of a Tiger fumble as did Ben Kuntzman stopping a Tiger drive.  Special teams came to life with Joe Montgomery going three for three on PAT’s  and the big turnover on the Grayson Hinte strip after the Dragons punted.  On offense Taylor Rowland had four completions in four attempts for forty six yards plus twenty nine yards rushing for one touchdown.  Dennis McNeil gained forty eight yards on eight rushes and a thirteen yard catch.  Lane Farrel picked up twenty nine yards on seven carries and Hinte had 154 yards on fifteen carries scoring two touchdowns.

COLLIERVILLE 24 CORDOVA 12
ARTICLE BY JAMES HINTE
9/21/06 @ CORDOVA

The Freshman Dragons visited the Cordova Wolves and put in a workmanlike performance to earn their fourth victory of the season.  On a night that produced few big plays the Dragons recovered six Cordova fumbles, scored on an interception and dominated possession running fifty nine plays to only twenty one for the Wolves.

Dennis McNeil took the opening kickoff and returned it thirteen yards to the Dragon 38.  Grayson Hinte took the first handoff for a short gain followed by a five yard pickup by Lane Farrel.  On third and four Hinte fought for a five yard gain to pick up first down.  On the next play Hinte gained nine yards and Chad Brown ran for five more for another first down.  Dennis McNeil took the handoff up the middle for a seven yard burst putting the ball on the Cordova twenty six yard line.  The drive stalled with Hinte picking up only six yards on three carries and an incomplete pass.

Cordova took over at the twenty and on their first play Dennis McNeil and Brady Ray forced the first Cordova fumble and Brady Ray fell on it at the sixteen.

Grayson Hinte ran three times picking up the first down and with first and goal on the five yard line followed the block of Dennis McNeil for the first score of the game.  The Dragons attempted a pass play for two points that was unsuccessful and the score was 6-0.

Chad Brown put the kickoff on the Cordova twenty and during the stop the ball was popped out of the returners hands and rolled back to the fifteen yard line with the wolves maintaining possession.  The Wolves picked up a first down and on third and two Nate Reese met the Wolves running back and stopped him for a two yard loss and the first quarter came to a close.  Cordova picked up the first down with a quarterback sneak and then Alex Ferrara made a tackle for a short loss, Chase Mann and Clayton France combined for a tackle on a short pass play and Dennis McNeil made another stop for no gain forcing the Wolves to punt on fourth and six from their forty four yard line.  The snap sailed over the punter’s head and Grayson Hinte came in untouched from the left side to recover the ball at the twenty.

After a false start penalty that put the ball on the twenty five Grayson Hinte took three pitches around the right side behind Holt Norris and Cody Jackson for gains of eight, seven and eleven yards to put the Dragons up 12-0.

Cordova took the ensuing kickoff at the eighteen yard line and returned the kick eighty two yards for a score.  The two point conversion was stopped as the Dragons shot into the backfield for a loss on the play.

Collierville started their next drive on their thirty five and Dennis McNeil took the handoff for the biggest gain by the Dragons going twenty two yards to the Cordova forty three.  Grayson Hinte picked up six and seven yards for another first down.  On first and ten at the thirty Taylor Rowland’s pass went off the hands of Dennis McNeil and on second down Chad Brown took the handoff for a dive up the middle for six yards.  On third and four Grayson Hinte took the pitch and handed off to Brady Ray for a reverse but the Wolves read the play and made the stop for a six yard loss.  Going for it on fourth and ten, the Dragons coaching staff lined up four receivers and Taylor Rowland nearly completed the pass to Grayson Hinte as the ball went off Hinte’s finger tips.  Cordova took over on downs and the half expired after four plays.

The Dragons kicked off to start the second half and on the first play from scrimmage Cordova picked up twenty nine yards.  On the next play however Chad Brown and Cim Ford combined for the tackle forcing another fumble and Ford dropped on the ball at the twenty.

After no gain on first down Grayson Hinte and Dennis McNeil had back to back six yard gains for a first down.  Hinte took the next two hand offs for gains of eighteen and sixteen yards and the Dragons were on the move.  After a Cordova stop on first down Hinte picked up nine yards on the next two plays setting up fourth and short.  Rowland faked the ball to Farrel and handed off to Hinte on the counter for an eight yard run and another first down.  After another good stop by the Wolves on first down, Hinte ran for fourteen yards dragging three Cordova tacklers to the four yard line.  The Dragons scored on the next play as Hinte followed the block of Holt Norris for a four yard touchdown run.  The two point conversion failed following a false start penalty.

The Dragon kickoff squirted out of bounds at the Wolves forty eight.  Cim Ford made the stop on first down and then Cordova completed a short pass and the receiver worked his way through the Collierville secondary for a touchdown.  Chad Brown made the stop on the two point conversion and the Dragons lead was cut to 18-12.

Grayson Hinte took the kick off at the twenty yard line and was finally tackled by a pack of wolves at the Cordova forty five.  Hinte picked up eleven yards on the next two plays setting up first down at the thirty four.  After no gain and a short loss Taylor Rowland connected with Dennis McNeil on a crossing pattern and McNeil picked up thirteen yards on the play to the twenty seven.  On fourth and three Rowland pitched to Grayson Hinte going around the right end for a twenty seven yard run and touchdown however there was a flag on the play for a block in the back and the touchdown was called back.  The Dragons were unsuccessful on the fourth down conversion and the Wolves took over at their thirty five yard line.

Cordova picked up five yards on first down but Dennis McNeil made a tackle for a one yard loss on second down followed by a two yard loss on third.  Trailing by six the Wolves went for fourth and eight and completed a pass.  The Cordova receiver took the pass and ran down the sideline for a big gain only to fumble during the tackle with Taylor Harris making the recovery at the Dragons thirty four.

The Dragons could not get anything going on the drive with only one first down as a result of a personal foul, late hit call.  Grayson Hinte took the pitch on fourth down and did a quick kick for the punt.  A block in the back call during the return put the ball on the Cordova twenty five.

On first and ten the Wolves went to the air and Clayton France read the play perfectly.  France  intercepted the pass and ran forty yards for the Dragons score and the lead was back to twelve points.

Continuing the theme of the night, Cordova fumbled the kick off and the Dragons took over at the thirty yard line.  After a false start penalty on first down, Grayson Hinte picked up six yard and Lane Farrel ran back to back plays for twelve and a first down.  Farrel took the next three plays and time expired with the Dragons winning 24-12.

The Dragons defense dominated the Wolves forcing seven fumbles, recovering six on the night.  Clayton France made the big play on defense returning an interception forty yards for a touchdown and also making several tackles.  Dennis McNeil turned in another strong defensive performance making several stops and forced a fumble.   On offense Grayson Hinte was the workhorse for the night carrying the ball twenty eight times for 169 yards and thirty five on a kickoff.  Dennis McNeil picked up fifty one yards on only six carries plus thirteen on one pass play.  Lane Farrel bulled twenty eight yards on eight carries.
